Curatorial notes
This is Jacek Malczewski’s *Self-Portrait*, painted at an unknown date, currently held in a private collection. Malczewski lived during a tumultuous period in Polish history, marked by partitions and a struggle for national identity. His art often grapples with themes of patriotism, mythology, and personal experience. In this image, the artist portrays himself with a melancholic expression as an allegorical figure, an angel, adjusts a blue ribbon around him. This ribbon, adorned with Polish motifs, may symbolize the complex ties that bind the artist to his homeland. The angel, a recurring figure in Malczewski's work, might represent inspiration or a spiritual guide, or perhaps an aspect of the artist's own psyche. Malczewski once said, “An artist must search for symbols that contain the soul of the nation.” Through his self-portraits, he explores the intersection of his identity as an artist and as a Pole, inviting us to consider the burdens and responsibilities that come with cultural and national consciousness.
