Carel Adolph Lion Cachet made this drawing, sometime around 1924, and you can see it today at the Rijksmuseum. I love the strong graphic composition and the flat decorative quality, it really puts the emphasis on the image as image, you know? I find it so fascinating to think about how Cachet built up the image—layer by layer, mark by mark. Each form coming into being through error, adjustment, and those moments of pure intuition that every artist craves. Those golden lions have such an art nouveau elegance, but also a symbolic presence. I wonder if he was thinking of other artists while he was making this. It's like they're all in conversation, across time, inspiring each other’s creativity. This piece really embraces ambiguity and uncertainty, allowing for multiple interpretations, rather than fixed or definitive readings.
