Guillerot made this Landscape with Hilltop Villa in the mid-17th century using etching. This intaglio printmaking technique involves using acid to cut into a metal plate, which is then inked and printed. Look closely at the intricate lines that define the landscape – from the villa perched atop the hill to the grazing animals below. Etching allows for a level of detail that captures the texture of the natural world. But it also demands a high degree of skill and control, which is labor intensive. Prints like these were not only aesthetic objects but also commodities, produced for a growing market. They democratized art in a way, making images accessible to a wider audience beyond the wealthy elite who could afford original paintings. Consider the social context in which this print was made, with its depiction of labor, land, and perhaps a touch of romanticism. It blurs the boundaries of fine art and craft.
