This is Robert Frank’s contact sheet for the Saul Steinberg "Bed Story," a series made for Harper's Bazaar, and it’s full of possibilities, hesitations, and choices, much like painting. It's not about perfection, but about seeing what happens. The grainy texture and the way Frank frames each shot, one after the other, give you a real sense of process. I love how you can see the artist, presumably Steinberg, shifting positions, the light changing, and the small adjustments making a big difference. There’s one frame, near the middle, where the figure is leaning forward, almost like he’s about to tell you a secret – it’s so intimate. You can see how the story could unfold in many different ways. Frank’s work reminds me a bit of Garry Winogrand, who also loved to capture life as it happened, raw and unfiltered. What stays with me is how these frames, like brushstrokes, build up to something more than just a picture – they tell a story about time, movement, and the beauty of imperfection.
