Hendrik Dunlop created this photograph, "Gezicht op een huis met een erf langs het water, vermoedelijk in Fuzhou," with a gelatin silver print. Notice the composition. The scene is divided into thirds. To the left, a tree canopy and the reflective water. To the right, the architecture of the house and dock. The photograph, however, emphasizes tonal qualities over crisp definition. It’s almost as if the buildings and tree are dissolving into the landscape. This soft focus gives the scene an atmospheric quality which helps to define the structural layout. Dunlop's photograph reveals the integration of built and natural environments. It challenges the strict categorization of landscape versus architecture. The scene evokes the concept of heterotopia, a space that contains multiple layers of meaning, reflecting both the real and the imagined. Dunlop presents us with a vision of cultural and ecological harmony.
