This is an anonymous design for a book illustration: a soldier approaching a couple. The artwork presents a scene of conflict. Two uniformed soldiers frame a couple in what seems to be a parlor setting. The woman raises her hand in a gesture of warding off one of the soldiers. How are we to read this image? Is this an image about the cost of war, the disruption of domestic life? Or something else? Perhaps it would be useful to think about the era in which this was made; the late 18th century was a time of significant upheaval. Revolutions, shifting social structures, and new ideas about citizenship created instability, particularly for women. With its play of power dynamics and gendered expectations, this illustration can be viewed as a lens through which we see the negotiation of personal and political tensions. What stories might this image tell us? What roles do these figures play in the larger narratives of their time?
