Stefano della Bella created this print, 'A horseman, facing front, a group of horsemen in background to the right, from 'Various cavalry exercises', in the 17th century. The composition is dominated by a central horseman rendered with remarkable detail against a light background. The artist uses line work to create texture and depth. Note how the lines vary in thickness and density to define the forms of the horse and rider, and how the cross-hatching gives volume. The background with the group of horsemen to the right are treated with lighter lines and a diminished scale to establish depth of field. This method of representation places the viewer in a position to assess the horseman, and, by extension, to reflect on the role and image of the cavalry during this period. Della Bella masterfully uses form to create a sense of visual hierarchy and narrative depth, inviting us to explore the artwork's structure.
