Curatorial notes
Johannes or Lucas van Doetechum made this print called ‘Village with sheep and a seated shepherd’ with etching in the Netherlands. Here, the artist provides us a glimpse into the rhythms of rural life. In the 16th century, the Netherlands was undergoing significant social and economic changes. The rise of a merchant class and increasing urbanization led to a growing interest in the countryside as a site of leisure and retreat. This image reflects those changing attitudes, presenting an idealized view of rural life that emphasizes harmony between people and nature. The presence of the seated shepherd indicates that this is not simply a depiction of labor. Instead, it suggests a space for contemplation and rest. To understand this work better, we can consult historical maps, agricultural records, and literature from the period. This kind of research will give us insight into the social and economic forces that shaped its production and reception.
