This is a wire sculpture of a horse rearing up, made by Alexander Calder. The way he uses line is so playful and economical, and it reminds me of drawing in the air. There's a lightness to it, despite the solid material. Look at how Calder uses the wire – thin, dark lines twisting and turning to define the horse's form. You can almost feel the tension in the wire, like a coiled spring ready to release. The horse feels energetic, full of life and movement. I love how he suggests the mane and tail with these little looping squiggles, like he's doodling in three dimensions. Calder’s wire sculptures have always been a touchstone for my own work. He reminds us that art doesn't always have to be heavy or serious, it can be light, fun, and full of unexpected twists and turns. Like a conversation with an old friend, Calder always manages to surprise and delight.
