Curatorial notes

Vincent Xeus created this artwork, "The Serpent." Born in 1981, Xeus brings a contemporary lens to classical portraiture. Here, the artist plays with light and shadow to create a sense of mystery around the figure. The man’s face, partially obscured, emerges from the darkness, illuminated just enough to reveal his expression of what seems to be pleasant surprise. The serpent pipe adds an intriguing layer; it suggests transformation. Xeus uses the pipe to subtly challenge traditional notions of masculinity. Xeus seems to invite viewers to consider how appearances can be deceiving, reminding us to look beyond surface-level interpretations. In doing so, Xeus presents an exploration of identity that is as much about unveiling as it is about concealing.
