Snuffbox

Curatorial notes
This snuffbox was created by Jean Ducrollay in the 18th century. The object presents itself as a rigid geometric form softened by the organic motifs of flowers. The radiant lines emerging from the corners and centers of the box’s faces create a dynamic visual texture. These lines, meticulously engraved into the gold, catch and reflect light, giving the object a sense of pulsating energy. The floral decorations, while naturalistic, are stylized, fitting seamlessly into the box's overall structure. The lines create a semiotic system where the box goes beyond utility, becoming a signifier of luxury and taste. Ducrollay masterfully combines form and decoration to create a piece that destabilizes the boundary between the functional and the artistic. This tension is a reminder of how art objects invite us to reflect on the meanings we ascribe to beauty and utility.
