Curatorial notes

Editor: This photograph by Paul Coldwell shows a small, dark house-like structure perched on a block. It’s quite stark. What do you see in this piece? Curator: This evokes ideas about shelter and vulnerability, particularly in relation to social and political displacement. The house, seemingly fragile, becomes a symbol of precarious existence. Do you think about its potential as a commentary on forced migration or the housing crisis? Editor: I hadn't considered that, but the instability of the structure definitely speaks to that now that you mention it. It's so small too! Curator: Exactly! The scale diminishes the idea of safety. Perhaps it prompts us to question who has access to secure shelter, and the systemic inequalities embedded within that. Editor: That’s a powerful reading. Thanks for opening my eyes to these deeper layers. Curator: My pleasure. It's through these critical dialogues that we uncover the artwork's potential for social commentary.
