Charles Jacque created this etching, “In Front of the House”, in France, around 1865. We can see it as more than just a glimpse into rural life. The artist uses visual codes to speak to the social structures of his time. The setting is a humble farmstead, rendered with meticulous detail. What story do these visual cues tell? The women depicted are absorbed in domestic duties. This imagery reflects the prevailing societal expectations of women in 19th-century France. The artist made this in a period of rapid industrialization. There was nostalgia for rural life, but also a neglect of the struggles faced by those who lived it. A deeper understanding of this work can be achieved through the study of French social history, periodicals of the time, and institutional records, to allow for a nuanced interpretation of the work within its socio-political context. The image of this type, therefore, reflects the complex social realities of its time.
