This is a nude study of two working men, made with pen in brown, and brush in gray, by an anonymous artist. The sketch invites us to consider how labor and the male form have been historically represented in art. The men are captured in the midst of physical exertion. One is carrying a bundle of reeds on his shoulders, while the other supports him. The artist captures the strain and strength inherent in their labor. It makes me think about the dignity of work, and who is chosen to be represented in art, and how. Historically, the depiction of nude figures was often reserved for mythological or heroic subjects. This work departs from traditional representations by placing working-class men at the forefront. It reminds us to consider the value and visibility of different bodies.
