Christian Joseph Berres created this print of the Stephansdom in Vienna from the University observatory. Berres, an Austrian anatomist and artist, lived in a time of immense social change. Following the Napoleonic wars, Vienna became a center of political negotiations and espionage, but also a city of expanding middle classes. This print offers a literal and symbolic vantage point as it looks down upon the city’s iconic cathedral from a place of science and learning. The Church was traditionally the center of knowledge production and power. Here Berres reverses that dynamic. It seems to suggest the shifting societal values of the early 19th century, where empirical observation began to challenge the traditional authority of religion. Consider how Berres, as a scientist, might have viewed his role in documenting and interpreting the world around him. This image captures the essence of a changing era, where new perspectives emerged, and the foundations of traditional power were subtly questioned.
