Anton Kern made this drawing, "A Ceiling with Apollo Presiding over Military and Historical Learning," with pen and brown ink, and gray wash. The god Apollo overlooks men who study military and historical subjects. The sketch suggests the ideas and concepts valued in the eighteenth century Enlightenment era. The scene is framed in the rococo style, which served as the official style of the aristocracy. The sketch was probably a proposal for a ceiling fresco, a common way for aristocrats to display their wealth and power. Aristocrats often commissioned art that served as a means of confirming the ideals of their time and their place within its social structure. As an art historian, I can say that this artwork can be better understood by further research on the history of aristocratic patronage, rococo art, and the Enlightenment. By exploring these avenues, the meaning of art becomes contingent on social and institutional context.
