Editor: This is Mino Maccari's etching of Giorgio Morandi. I'm struck by how the density of lines creates form. What can you tell me about its production and context? Curator: Look closely at the cross-hatching. Etching, as a printmaking process, allowed for multiples and a wider distribution of images. How do you think this impacted the consumption and understanding of Morandi's image? Editor: So, this technique democratized the image. The materials and method of production influenced its accessibility. I hadn't thought of it that way. Curator: Exactly. Considering the material conditions shifts our understanding of artistic intention. Editor: I see how focusing on the materiality of the work can shift our understanding. Thanks!
