This print, “Hele en halve piëdestal en vijf consoles”, was made by Johannes or Lucas van Doetechum using etching, engraving and paper. Notice the incredible detail achieved through the etching and engraving. Look closely and you’ll see it represents architectural elements, specifically a half-pedestal and five consoles. The image is all about surfaces: flat planes of walls, the texture of brickwork. The geometric forms are rendered with precision, and the interplay of light and shadow gives depth to the design. The traditional processes of etching and engraving were incredibly labor-intensive, requiring highly skilled artisans. The print is more than just a design on paper; it’s a record of work, skill, and a specific approach to image making. This piece invites us to look beyond the image itself and to think about the process, the hand, and the history embedded in the work. It is a reminder that skill and labor are intrinsic to art, challenging the divide between fine art and craft.
