Curatorial notes

This photograph, "Nest met eieren van een wulp," was taken by Richard Tepe. Here, Tepe lets us peek into the intimate sphere of a bird’s nest, a humble construction, yet full of life's potential. The composition is so natural, almost accidental. This feels like a quick snapshot, yet it's loaded with the texture of straw and speckled eggs. The monochrome palette really heightens the contrast, making you notice the detail. The eggs are resting in the nest so naturally, but if you look closely, you begin to see that the eggs are far from uniform, each with its own unique pattern of speckles. To me, that's where the magic lies. Tepe reminds me a little of Agnes Martin, finding the extraordinary in the ordinary. His work invites us to contemplate the quiet beauty of the natural world and the simple construction of a bird's nest as a metaphor for home, safety, and new beginnings.
