Robert Frank made this photograph, 'New Lost City Ramblers', using a camera, of course, and a great eye. I love how Frank uses light in this image. It’s not just about what's in focus, but how the light itself becomes a kind of texture, almost like a physical presence. Look at the background; the sun is there, but it also creates these blurry edges. It's not precise, and it’s not trying to be. It's kind of like artmaking itself, a process of giving up control and seeing what happens. That’s the beauty of Frank's work - he embraces the accidental. This reminds me a little of some of the painterly photographs of someone like Gerhard Richter. Both artists are interested in blurring the lines, questioning the nature of representation. It's all part of this ongoing conversation in art, where artists challenge each other, build on each other's ideas. It's not about fixed meanings, but about opening up possibilities.
