Here's a drawing by Gustav Klimt, a quick sketch of Adele Bloch-Bauer, made with what looks like graphite pencil on paper. I can imagine Klimt’s hand moving swiftly across the page, trying to capture something of his sitter's essence with just a few strokes. What I love about drawings like this is that you get a sense of the artist thinking, making decisions in real time. You can see the ghostly traces of previous lines, where he's adjusted the angle of an arm or the drape of a dress. Each line isn't just describing a form, it’s carrying feeling, intention. I've made drawings like this. They remind me of Cy Twombly, both artists searching, never quite resolving. Ultimately, I think art making is a conversation across time. Artists build on each other’s ideas, challenge each other’s assumptions. Klimt and Twombly, different as they are, are both part of this ongoing dialogue, pushing the boundaries of representation and expression.
