Adrianus Eversen made this drawing of a dilapidated building using graphite. Eversen lived during a time of rapid urbanization in the Netherlands and was known for his cityscapes, often depicting scenes of daily life amidst changing urban environments. The image appears to capture a structure in decay; its framework exposed, and elements of the facade either missing or damaged. This work evokes feelings of vulnerability and the ephemeral nature of human constructs. Was Eversen commenting on the social and economic changes he witnessed? Perhaps he was thinking about those left behind by progress? The drawing invites us to contemplate the human stories embedded within these forgotten spaces. Eversen prompts us to consider themes of abandonment, memory, and the impact of time on both physical structures and the lives they once sheltered.
