Robert Frank’s photograph, Table/Mallorca, captures a quiet scene with light, shadow, and silver gelatin. There’s a real sense of seeing what was in front of him. The textures are so soft, from the grainy, almost velvety shadows to the way the light reflects on the table's surface. It’s a study in contrasts: the solid form of the table and chair against the hazy, undefined background. Frank coaxes a whole range of shades from his materials, and at a closer look, you can see that the highlights on the table are a series of small dark marks, like a code or series of notations. Frank’s eye reminds me of Walker Evans, but where Evans captured architecture with a sense of solidity and permanence, Frank finds a poetry in the ephemeral, in the everyday. It's not just about what's there, but how we see it. And isn’t that what art’s all about?
