Curator: This is a print by Peter Doig, titled "From ‘Pond Life’," currently held in the Tate Collections. It's a small work, measuring just 172 by 280 millimeters. Editor: It evokes a quiet melancholy, almost isolation. The figures seem so small against that pale background. Curator: The lines used to define the figures and the skeletal trees are remarkably delicate, almost scratchy, hinting at the etching process. Editor: I’m intrigued by the social dynamics suggested here. The figures, their backs turned, seemingly disconnected from each other and the dilapidated building in the background. This print makes me consider themes of abandonment and social alienation. Curator: The artist’s choice of materials is critical. The monochromatic palette and the printmaking process add to the sense of starkness. Editor: It certainly prompts reflection on societal issues related to housing and community. Curator: Yes, a powerful, albeit understated, piece about place and presence. Editor: I agree, so much meaning in a small format.

Ten Etchings is Doig’s first print portfolio. As the title indicates, it is a suite of ten etchings. The portfolio was produced in an edition of thirty-five. Tate’s copy is one of six additional proof sets. Each print is individually signed and numbered ‘TC’ (Tate copy) by the artist. The portfolio is presented in a red artist’s solander box with title and colophon pages designed by Peter B. Willberg. It was printed at Hope Sufferance Press, London on 350gsm Zerkall paper and published by Charles Booth-Clibborn under his imprint, The Paragon Press.
