Curatorial notes

This photograph of Mount Fuji over a lake in Japan was captured by William Kinnimond Burton, a Scottish engineer and photographer active in the late 19th century. Burton's work emerged during a period of intense cultural exchange between Japan and the West, shaped by the Meiji Restoration and growing interest in Japonism. Here, we see a landscape imbued with serene beauty, a typical representation of Japan for Western audiences, where the natural world is often idealized. Yet, Burton’s position as a Westerner photographing Japan raises questions about representation and cultural appropriation. Was he simply capturing the beauty of the landscape, or was he also framing Japan through a colonial gaze? This image prompts us to consider the power dynamics inherent in cross-cultural representation, and how personal perspectives shape our understanding of different cultures.
