This is 'Guggenheim 105/Hoboken 3--New Jersey', a photographic work by Robert Frank. Look at this gelatin silver print, the sequenced frames, the way the narrative unfolds. I can imagine Frank on the streets, walking and watching. There are people on parade, rows of dark figures, and then the turn, the flag, the writing. There's a decisive moment to capture, but it takes time to find it. The film reel itself becomes a kind of map for seeing. I love how Frank is not afraid of tilting the camera or obscuring things. He's pushing against some need to have everything be in focus and legible. There's something else here, a little like painting, where things come into focus and then dissolve back out again. The world is never fixed, and Frank shows us that. We can continue his vision by pushing our own ways of seeing, and not settling on one way to picture reality.
