Julien Dupré created this print titled 'Korenbinders', or 'The Harvesters', in the late 19th century, using etching. The composition is dominated by the depiction of rural labor, featuring three figures engaged in the act of binding sheaves of grain. The figures and landscape are rendered through a dense network of etched lines. Note how Dupré's technique invites a semiotic interpretation, where the repetitive strokes used to depict the haystacks and fields function as signs of the labor-intensive agricultural processes. The monochromatic palette enhances the structural elements of the image, focusing our attention on the patterns and textures. The dense etching technique used challenges the traditional picturesque, instead exposing a rawness and a focus on manual labor. The structure of the artwork challenges fixed notions of pastoral beauty, engaging with new ways of thinking about the dignity of labor and the socio-economic conditions of rural life.
