Albertus Verhoesen created this print called 'Officier van Gezondheid der 3e Kl.' using etching techniques. Verhoesen lived in a time of significant social upheaval, marked by evolving class structures and military reforms. In this context, the artwork offers a glimpse into the hierarchical structures of the Dutch military. The officer's elaborate uniform, complete with gold buttons and a saber, signals his status within the military's rigid social hierarchy. However, beyond its depiction of rank, the artwork also hints at the emotional and personal dimensions of military life. The officer’s hand gesture and expression, evoke a sense of duty, but also perhaps a hint of longing. It invites us to reflect on the sacrifices made by individuals in service and the complexities of identity within military institutions.
