Editor: Here we have an untitled photographic work by Martin Schweig, with two portraits sharing one print. One is of a woman in a lacy dress; the other is a father with his two daughters. There’s something so formal and posed about them both. What do you make of it? Curator: Well, isn't it fascinating? The way these separate moments are stitched together, like echoes in a family album. I get a sense of performance, don’t you? They are trying to evoke the timeless glamour of the 30’s, despite the mundanity of it all. Editor: I see what you mean. There's a disconnect between the staged setting and the true candidness. Curator: Exactly! And isn't that the funny thing about family photos? They're meant to capture a truth, but they’re always just a tiny, curated sliver. I leave this with a sense of warmth and nostalgia, I hope you will too.
