Philips Galle created this engraving, "Petrus en de andere apostelen worden door een engel bevrijd uit de gevangenis," using line and contrast to guide our eyes through its narrative. The composition is structured by architectural elements, staircases and arches which frame the figures and delineate space. Notice how the dark, densely etched areas contrast with the glowing aura surrounding the angel, creating a visual hierarchy. The angel leads the apostles, bathed in light, away from the oppressive darkness. The guards are scattered. This interplay of light and dark not only directs our gaze, but also symbolizes the divine intervention freeing the apostles from their earthly constraints. Galle employs a semiotic system where light signifies salvation and darkness represents imprisonment, reinforcing the engraving's religious narrative. The linear precision and structured composition serve to convey a story of deliverance through divine power.
