Hryhorii Havrylenko made this unnamed female image with ink on paper at an unknown date. The controlled hatching that describes the space around her gives off a kind of quiet intensity. It’s almost meditative, like counting stitches while sewing. There's something inherently vulnerable about a drawing, isn’t there? The starkness of the black lines on white paper throws the subject into high relief. Look at the way the hatching varies in density, creating the subtle gradients of tone that describe the fall of light across her face. There's a quietude, a stillness in her expression, something classical. And yet, the cross-hatching lends a modern feel, like she is being viewed through the lines of a screen. Havrylenko reminds me of Agnes Martin, both artists create so much resonance with very simple means. Ultimately, art is about seeing – and offering new ways for others to see too. In this piece, ambiguity becomes a source of strength, inviting multiple interpretations.
