Gerrit Dou painted "The Painter in His Workshop" sometime in the mid-17th century using oils on panel. The composition is dominated by warm, earthy tones, sharply contrasted by the dramatic chiaroscuro effect which throws the artist's face into stark relief. A cascade of meticulously rendered objects tumbles towards us, almost spilling out of the frame. Dou meticulously arranges symbolic items to reflect the artist's intellectual and creative environment. The sculptural group of Cain and Abel, a globe, musical instruments and a painter at work all suggest that art is deeply rooted in history, science and culture. Note the use of linear perspective; it does more than simply create depth, it draws us into the world of art. Consider how Dou uses this structured composition to destabilize the traditional hierarchies between artist, model, and artwork. Is Dou the painter in control, or simply another object within his own construction? This painting is not just a representation, it is a complex meditation on the nature of representation itself.
