This lithograph, "Skater," was printed by Allen & Ginter for their cigarette packs, part of the "World's Dudes" series. It’s a small piece of paper, but printed with an image of luxury. Look at the skater’s fur coat, decorative boots, and patterned trousers – not to mention the monocle! The lithographic process allowed Allen & Ginter to reproduce such images rapidly, and in great quantities. While seemingly simple, the image relies on the skilled labor of artists, engravers, and printers to bring it into being. These cards were essentially advertisements, meant to entice consumers to purchase cigarettes. Each card was a small, affordable luxury, and the images a reflection of aspiration. The image speaks to the skater's status and implied wealth. But the fact that it was made to sell a cheap product also tells a story of mass production, commercialism, and how the lines between art, craft, and advertising can blur.
