Abraham Teerlink created this landscape view of the hills around Tivoli with pen and brush, using watercolor on paper. The washes of color are laid on very thinly, almost like a fresco technique, building up a sense of depth and atmosphere, which are the true subjects of the work. The visible traces of the artist's hand reveal much about the cultural significance of the landscape tradition during Teerlink's time. Painting 'en plein air,' or outdoors, had become increasingly popular, reflecting a growing appreciation for nature. The light and airy quality of watercolor perfectly captures the nuances of the natural world. But the artwork also speaks to the rise of tourism and leisure activities, as people sought to experience picturesque views firsthand. This work becomes a souvenir of sorts, a memento of a leisurely pursuit.
